Laikipia residents encouraged to register for affordable housing units

Laikipia residents have been encouraged to register with affordable housing ahead of completion of the houses mid next year.

Laikipia East Deputy County Commissioner Patrick Muli said that residents interested in being allocated the units were required to enrol and contribute 10 percent of the total cost of the house adding that the houses were at 35 percent complete.

There has been good progress and the construction is about 35 percent complete and the groundwork has been done. However, in January, the contractor will expedite it to recover the time lost during the rainy season,” said Muli.

He pointed out that the houses constructed in Nanyuki had created job opportunities for the youth hence reduction of the crime rate.

‘’This project has yielded a lot of benefits here in Laikipia. Our youth have been offered employment, even the security has improved and the crime rate has declined. Youth are now focused and I believe the salary they are getting is helping their families,” DCC noted.

Muli said that about 100 youth had benefited with jobs each day from 200 units under construction in Nanyuki and plans were underway to upscale to a total of 500.

“We applaud the government for considering us with this project; we are now able to support our families and move forward. Construction work calls for a dedication for one to benefit,” said Alex Mutuma, a youth from Nanyuki who works at the construction site.

Ann Wanjiru who works as a forelady at the construction site, on her part said idleness among the youth had reduced following the affordable housing project in the area.
