As schools reopen for the third term, Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) held a peaceful protest in Nanyuki town, Laikipia County urging the government to address their grievances.
This comes even after Kenya Union of Teachers (KNUT) withdrew their strike notice yesterday(Sunday) resulting in the split of the two teachers’ trade unions.
Speaking during the protests on Monday, the Kuppet team issued a list of demands to be met before returning to classrooms for the fully packed third term.
The union led by the Laikipia branch chairman Jediel Kimathi called on confirmation of about 46,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers to permanent and pensionable terms, promotion of teachers, streamlining of their medical schemes and implementation of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
“We call on the confirmation of the JSS teachers to permanent and pensionable terms and also the government to provide necessary resources to the teachers’ medical scheme,” urged Kimathi.
He noted that teachers were being turned away in hospitals due to the delayed payment of the teachers’ medical scheme.
“Minet has a problem with teachers since they are not getting the disbursement on time as they are to supposed to get and hence you will find our teachers are being turned away when they go to hospital,’’ said the chairman.
