Residents of Taboino Location in Konoin Sub-county in Bomet took to the streets Thursday, protesting against illicit brews that they regretted had ruined their children.
Carrying twigs, the irate residents also lamented that the illegal liquor had become a threat to their security and their children’s education.
Led by Johnstone Rono, the protestors walked to Taboino Police Station, accusing law enforcers of abetting the vice.
“Illicit brew trade is thriving and in our view, it is because of the laxity of our officers who are not conducting crackdowns. The slackness is so suspicious and we are forced to think they are accomplices to the brewers and we now want the intervention of the County Commissioner, Dr Ahmed Omar, who has been leading a County campaign against illicit brews,” Rono added.
The Commissioner has been very vocal against illicit liquor and drugs, saying they have led many youths to deviate from leading productive lives to crime.
“I am urging all of you to work with the government in curbing brewing and consumption of illicit brews in our villages, which has led to backwardness and low productivity among area residents. We need to talk and get concerned about our youth; let’s urge them to stop alcoholism and drug abuse and lead meaningful lives,” Dr Omar advised recently.
Consequently, Dr. Omar warned that anyone arrested in the brewing dens will be handed custodial sentence without the option.
“We will discuss this with the Judiciary so that they can support us by giving out punitive measures aimed at curtailing the selling and consumption of illicit brews,” noted the Administrator.
