Kojonga residents given 1000 avocado seedlings to plant in this rainy season

Young men at Kojonga area in Narok East Sub County have benefitted from 1000 avocado seedlings donated by a well-wisher, Mr Jeff Mathai.

Mathai, a prominent businessman said his aim is to teach the morans to conserve the environment as they improve their livelihood since they will earn money through the sale of avocados.

“We all have to volunteer to support the efforts of our president to plant trees in our farms. This initiative intends to mobilise residents to grow trees,” he said.

He spoke at Kojonga village where he challenged the residents to take advantage of the ongoing rains to plant trees in their individual farms and institutions.

“Trees come with multiple benefits which include getting firewood, shade, wood, preventing soil erosion, beautifying the environment among others. I ask all of us to plant trees and improve our forest cover,” he said.

Mathai was accompanied by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Partners Care Company Mr Samuel Mwangi, whose company donated 100 sewing machines to help the vulnerable youth and women to boost their livelihood.

Mwangi said his company gave the machines to the vulnerable group so that they too can earn a livelihood and live a decent life.

“The machines will especially help those youths who dropped out of school at a young age because of retrogressive cultural practices and do not have a stable income,” he said.

The residents welcomed the move saying it is a major boost to improve their standards of livelihood as they will earn more money from the sale of avocado while others will use the sewing machine donated for business.

Paul Kisotu, a moran who benefited from the avocado seedlings thanked the sponsor and asked all the young people to embrace the pattern of planting trees to increase forest cover.

According to the county Forest Conservator Daniel Mkung, the county has so far planted over 565, 000 tree seedlings since the campaign to grow trees began. The county targets to plant about 4.3 million trees during this rainy season.
