Workers at Kitengela Prisons in Kajiando County including prison warders are currently benefiting from a three-day medical camp courtesy of Athi Complex Galaxy Hospital.
Among the services being offered are dental healthcare and counselling with the Athi Complex Galaxy Hospital administrator Hezekia Obilo Omondi, saying the medical camp was a way of giving back to the community.
“The prison warders help the community in a big way and having this medical camp here will help in early detection of any medical issues they may have for early treatment,” he said.
A recent survey by the National Police Service showed between 12 and 13 per cent of police officers have mental issues.
“Given that our forces go through a lot of challenges in their line of duty, we have come here to offer them guidance and counselling so that as they pursue their day to day duties, they can remember to check on their health, not just physical but mental as well,” added Omondi.
One of the beneficiaries Kizito Aukoa, a warder thanked the Galaxy hospital for the initiative stressing: “I am grateful for the medical camp and encourage other well-wishers to conduct such activities. Due to our busy schedules having them come to us is very convenient as we have only taken few minutes from work and were attended to,” he said.
He encouraged colleague wardens not to shy away from getting their health checked since they need to be healthy to serve the community better.
“I urge all my colleagues from all over the county to undergo medical checkups if they get a chance. You never know what ailments you might be suffering from and once you get checked you can start treatment early and be able to enjoy a fulfilling life,” he added.
Those who needed further medical follow-ups were referred to the hospital. The medical camp is set to be concluded today.
Galaxy Hospital is also set to facilitate a similar exercise at Kajiando Prison later this month.
