Kisumu to host international rugby test match

Kisumu County is set to play host to the international rugby test match between Kenya and South Africa.

The match between Kenya’s Simbas and South Africa’s Springboks is slated for 26th March 2022, at the new Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium.

Kisumu Deputy Governor, Dr. Mathews Owili, said the match was set to put the County and the Country on the international map and open up avenues for similar events in future.

“The trials will cement our status as a sports powerhouse and at the same time open the Country to other international events,” he said.

“I welcome the South African Rugby League National Team and its delegation to Kenya on behalf of the Governor and the County Government of Kisumu, as we look forward to hosting an exciting contest between our nations,” he added.

Acknowledging the world rank of the Springboks, Dr. Owili said it was a great honor hosting and playing against them.

“As you are aware, the Springboks is at the top of the world in terms of rugby rankings, and playing against them is both an honor and a challenge. I have the confidence that our team will put their best foot forward and win,” he said.

Speaking at the stadium, Monday, during the media launch, Owili said the County Government has put measures in place to ensure that all Covid-19 protocols are observed during the match.

“I welcome the whole world to come and sample what Kisumu has to offer. I also welcome everyone to sample our warm culture and amazing sites of this great county,” he said.

Kenya Rugby League Federation, Kisumu Representative, Paul Okong’o, lauded the efforts by the Ministry of Sports and the County Government towards the match.
