Kisumu Ndogo United FC emerged the champions of the Twahir Cup in a dramatic final against Inter City United held at the Malindi Alaskan Grounds Sunday.
The two teams, representing Malindi Town Ward and Shela Ward respectively, fought through a tense match that ended in a 1-1 stalemate, with Kisumu Ndogo United eventually securing the win through a penalty shootout.
The game began with intense action as both teams demonstrated their skills and resilience. Kisumu Ndogo United took an early lead in the 22nd minute thanks to a brilliant strike from their forward Akiba Mohamed.
The celebration from the players and their team manager Ali Billy Mwangemi was electric, marking the team’s determination to take control of the match.
However, Inter City United, led by Coach Wilson Zarumbe, didn’t let the early setback dampen their spirit. In the 73rd minute, midfielder Mathias Tiazo equalized with a well-placed shot, ensuring that the match was far from over.
The goal was met with excitement from the Inter City bench, and two team managers shook hands to acknowledging the competitive spirit on display.
With both teams deadlocked at 1-1, the match proceeded to penalties, where the tension reached its peak. Inter City United had five players step up for their spot kicks. Out of the five, four successfully converted their penalties, but one miss proved costly.
On the other hand, Kisumu Dogo United showed calmness under pressure, with all of their penalty takers scoring. This flawless execution in the shootout sealed their victory.
Kisumu Dogo United’s win marked an impressive achievement for the team, considering their strong performance throughout the tournament. Their victory was celebrated by their supporters, who gathered at the Malindi Alaskan Grounds to cheer them on.
Coach Ali praised his team’s resilience and discipline, especially during the penalty shootout, while Coach Wilson Zarumbe expressed pride in his team’s performance, despite the loss.
Kisumu Ndogo United now holds the title as the champions of Malindi Town, a proud moment for the team and their supporters.
