Kilifi county governor Amason Jefwa Kingi has blamed the prolonged construction and expansion of highways as one of the major causes of accidents in Kilifi County.
The county boss claimed that ongoing road works have resulted in narrowing of the road leaving limited room for motorists to maneuver especially at places where diversion routes were not offered along the Mombasa Kilifi highway.
Referring to the most recent deadly accident that happened on 7th April, 2021 on Malindi-Kilifi highway that left 15 people dead, the governor pointed out that besides need for diligence by the concerned motorists, the slow expansion highway by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) contributed to carnage to a large extent.
During his address to the media, the visibly disappointed governor said they cannot afford to continue gambling with the lives of people in that manner and urged the highway authority to speed up the road expansion project.
Road accidents along the highway are on the rise due to poor state of the road and the issue came to the public limelight after six members of Kilifi County Government lost their lives during a head on collusion.
