Kihara Modern Market to Open Doors for Traders

The National and County Government Officers on Monday inspected the newly built Kihara Modern Market ahead of its opening in July 2021

The Kiambu Director of Presidential Delivery Unit Mrs Priscah Njeri and the County Director of Trade and Markets Mr Julius Mwololo led the inspection team.

“Our main agenda here today is to ensure that the market is ready to be used by the traders and to make sure that all the amenities in the new Market are fully functional,” Njeri said.

Eng. Evans Njoroge who is overseeing the Market construction however raised some issues that were yet to be addressed among them power shortage. “The electricity has been disconnected in the new Market facility by the Kenya power due to late payment. This has affected water supply in the market as power is needed to pump the commodity from the underground tanks for use in the facility,” said Eng. Njoroge.

On his part, the contractor Mr Abdi Mohamed of Cordia Limited acknowledged the challenge and assured them that they are in the process of finalizing their payment agreements with KPLC.

Mr Mohammed assured the group that all remaining issues will be addressed within the next two months after which they will hand over the market to the County government which will be in charge of its maintenance once it becomes functional.

The Market that has been in construction since 2017 is a 2 storey building with 365 stalls. It has ready shelves, a room for breastfeeding mothers, modern toilets and fire alarms among other facilities.
