A resident from Baringo County has requested the national government to create a platform that will allow Kenyans to fundraise for financially challenged NHIF holders.
Nelson Chelimo who spoke to KNA on Thursday in Kabarnet town noted with concern that there are thousands of poor and jobless citizens who get penalized after defaulting their monthly NHIF contributions against their wish.
Chelimo has been in and out of several hospitals due to a kidney related illness for more than six years and could not get time to hustle for the Sh500 monthly NHIF subscription.
The 58-year-old resident of Taimon village in Bartum Location said he used to rely on well-wishers till when his condition deteriorated to an extent he was taken to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for two months causing him to default the payment.
“Some hospitals detained me for some time because I was unable to pay the monthly subscription by the time I was at the ICU but luckily a well-wisher came to my aid,” he said.
“I am requesting the government and all Kenyans of goodwill to contribute to NHIF if possible an amount of Sh50 bob every year through the various mobile platforms and recognized banks in order to support those who cannot afford,” he said.
Chelimo said that all Kenyans must be their brothers and sisters keepers especially to health challenges which come at unnoticed times making most sick people not to enjoy important occasions like Christmas.
He urged politicians too to play a crucial role in championing such critical matters as they deliberate agendas like roads and education which are directly benefiting the people.
However, the proposal by Chelimo will not be necessary if the National government will roll out a universal health coverage programme which ensures all Kenyans access quality health care without financial hardship.
The programme launched in December 2018 was piloted in four counties of Isiolo, Kisumu, Machakos and Nyeri but is yet to kick off.
