Kitui County Textile Centre (KICOTEC) has been approved by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) to manufacture not only masks but also personal protective equipment, which will be distributed in all hospitals handling Covid-19 cases across the country.
Coverall, mask, gloves and boots are some of the personal protective equipment (PPE) essential for health care workers including doctors, nurses and all persons handling patients.
Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu addressing the press on Friday, confirmed the county had received the approval certificate from KEBS and added that processing of the coveralls is set to kick off as from Saturday.
“KICOTEC is already processing 35, 000 masks in day, and we have already purchased materials needed to make coveralls, ” she said.
Ngilu urged all farmers across the county not to sell their farm produce for fear of coronavirus uncertainties.
“We have discussed with the county response team and agreed that famers should keep their harvest to avoid food shortage in the coming days as we continue battling the Coronavirus pandemic”, she said.
Governor Ngilu also insisted on adherence to precautionary measures as stated in order to avoid the spread of COVID-19 disease.
“If anybody develops symptoms like sneezing or coughing, don’t take chances, let them go for checkup,” she added.
