In a bid to revitalise the local economy, Kangangi Market in Kiambu County is set to undergo a comprehensive renovation.
Kiambu Governor Kimani wa Matangi announced this during the commissioning of the newly constructed Gitaru Market in Kabete Sub County.
“The plan is part of President Ruto’s flagship programme, which aims to build five markets in the county with a three-storey modern design; these markets include Madaraka Market, two in Ruiru Market, Kangangi Market in Kiambu Town, and the Githunguri Market,” Wamatangi said.
Kangangi Market is situated in the centre of Kiambu Town and has been a cornerstone of trade in the region for decades. Its facelift will enhance both its aesthetic appeal and functionality.
One of the traders at the market, Martin Kimani, emphasised the need for robust data collection during the renovation process.
“For the market to truly meet our needs, the authorities must conduct thorough data collection to understand the diverse requirements of sellers,” said Kimani.
Ventilation, water supply, and adequate space were common themes echoed by several sellers, reflecting their desire for a modernized market that prioritizes both the comfort of sellers and the convenience of shoppers.
“Proper ventilation is crucial for us, especially those selling perishable goods. Adequate space and reliable water supply will not only enhance our working conditions but also attract more customers,” said Mary Wanjiku.
Another trader, Faith Njoki, expressed optimism about the provision of electricity and tax exemptions.
“The positive aspect is that the county government exempted us from taxes and the provision of electricity, and this has been a game changer for many of us who struggled with unreliable power sources before then,” Njoki remarked.
The anticipation surrounding the renovation of Kiambu Market has been further heightened as the market chairman, Mr. George Ngugi, expressed eagerness for official communication regarding when the renovation will commence and if sellers will be relocated during the period.
“We are eagerly waiting for timely and transparent communication, hoping that plans will be revealed soon to alleviate any uncertainties among market sellers,” Ngugi said.
As construction is set to begin, the renovated Kangangi Market is poised to become a modern hub for commerce, responding to the evolving needs of diverse vendors.
The project signifies a collaborative effort between Governor Kimani wa Matangi and the market community, showcasing the potential for change in the heart of Kiambu’s economic activities.
