Kiambu County invests in firefighting equipment

Kiambu County has ramped up efforts to combat frequent fire outbreaks by investing in modern fire engines and setting up fire hydrants in major towns to improve emergency response during outbreaks.

Governor Kimani Wamatangi announced the initiative on Monday, citing a sharp increase in fire-related tragedies that have led to loss of lives and destruction of property.

“Over 100 fire incidents have been reported in recent months, causing devastating losses. We are taking urgent action by purchasing modern fire engines and establishing hydrants to ensure a quicker response during emergencies,” Wamatangi stated while visiting families affected by fire oubreaks in the recent times.

To support victims, the County Government has also set aside Sh5 million to help families rebuild their homes and businesses.

The urgency of the county’s intervention follows two devastating fire incidents that occurred last week. On February 16, a fierce blaze swept through Kiambu market, destroying over 50 businesses and leaving traders grappling with immense losses. The fire spread rapidly, consuming goods and infrastructure, forcing business owners to watch helplessly as their livelihoods went up in flames.

Just days later, on February 19, tragedy struck Gitaru area, where a raging inferno claimed the lives of three young children, aged three months, four years, and nine years respectively. The children were trapped inside their home when the fire broke out, while their mother had briefly stepped out, unaware of the catastrophe unfolding.

As the flames intensified, the fire quickly spread and razed eight neighboring houses, displacing families and leaving a trail of destruction. Despite desperate rescue efforts by neighbors, the children could not be saved, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

Neighbors tried to rescue the children but were unable to reach them in time. The tragedy has left the community in shock and mourning.

Local MCA Jane Thogori has since urged parents to exercise caution and avoid leaving young children unattended, stressing the importance of fire safety awareness.

Meanwhile, Kabete Sub-County Police Commander Antony Mbogo confirmed that investigations are still underway to determine the cause of the blazes.

The Kiambu Fire Department is urging residents to report fire incidents immediately and prioritize fire safety measures to help prevent future disasters.

As Kiambu County strengthens its fire-fighting infrastructure, officials hope the new measures will enhance preparedness, minimize damage, and ultimately save lives.
