The County Government of Kiambu in conjunction with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social protection held a closed-door forum for Women in Kiambu County marking The International Women’s Day.
The Theme for this year’s celebration being Digital, Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Governor Rosemary Kirika said there was a huge gap in the use of technology by women, as studies have shown that men use technology and internet more than women.
Some of the reasons cited as to why women are less technologically advanced being lack of proper education, financial backing, time and motivation.
“I urge all women to buy themselves smartphones so they can learn how to make use of the internet, by maximising the use of social media and e-commerce platforms to advertise, promote and market their businesses online.”
She also encouraged them to grow their businesses by applying for the Hustler Fund that was readily available to responsible borrowers.
“The Hustler Fund is available at low interest rates. Every woman should be able to borrow and start something small to make sure she has an income to take care of her needs and that of her family, especially in these harsh economic times,” she said
Speaking to KNA, Esther Waithera, a tailor from Kikuyu said she was pleased that the county government had decided to prioritise the women agenda.
“Business has been a bit low as per profit margin. I have been wondering how to boost sales at my shop. I now know that I need to buy a smartphone so that I can sell my clothes online. I have always assumed internet and social media is for young people. Now I know better,” she said.
Governor Kimani Wamatangi was also present at the event, but he chose to take a back seat citing the fact that it was a day for women. He encouraged them to embrace technological innovation in order to achieve gender equality.
