Kenya Power Company (KPC) has launched its 2024 Sustainability Strategy to establish a robust, resilient, and sustainable energy ecosystem.
The company’s Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror insisted that the strategy not only safeguards and protects the environment, but also caters to the needs of the community.
On his part, the General Manager of Finance Stephen Vikiru announced that KPC aims to promote environmental sustainability and economic empowerment through social investment and community wellness.
During the launch held in Nairobi, the MD mentioned that Kenya Power is leveraging power from its stakeholders to foster the adoption of new technologies and energy within the energy sector.
“We also seek to scale key initiatives that will enable Kenya’s energy sector to drive sustainability and take action towards mitigating climate change,” he added.
Dr. Siror highlighted key initiatives like E-Mobility which fosters the sustainable use of electric vehicles and the promotion of portable electric gadgets that not only offer clean cooking options, but also lower electricity consumption.
The MD noted that businesses have shifted from traditional economic models to more inclusive models that factor in the impact of industrial operations on the environment and the community.
“To this effect, Kenya Power has adopted the Just Energy Transition (JET) framework that not only fosters the socio-economic responsibility of the company but also serves the community’s interests,” he emphasized.
Speaking at the event, KPC General Manager (GM) of Business Strategy Eng. Aggrey Machasio affirmed that the strategy is aligned with the government’s Vision 2030, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Constitution of Kenya.
In terms of SDGs, Eng. Machasio highlighted that the strategy would offer equal employment opportunities, deepen access to clean and reliable energy, offer fair labour practices and support local businesses.
He added that the strategy would focus on four key areas namely environmental stewardship, robust governance, social responsibility and economic resilience.
“To foster a thriving environment, we shall seek to implement renewable energy projects, conserve energy, reduce waste and preserve biodiversity,” announced the GM.
Eng. Machasio further stated that Kenya Power would prioritize the inclusivity and well-being of its employees, customers and communities by focusing on promoting diversity, health and safety, human rights, and community engagement.
He pointed out that the key pillar of the sustainability strategy is financial sustainability where KPC seeks to improve its cash flow by developing new business lines such as E-Charging Solutions, while enhancing the implementation of improved last mile connectivity.
The GM also mentioned other pillars including human capital which seeks to ensure fair labour practices and operational excellence, which would improve system efficiency and customer centricity, which supports biodiversity conservation.
Echoing his sentiments, KPC Board of Directors Chairperson Joy Masinde, reaffirmed that the strategy would foster a thriving environment by implementing measures to reduce the company’s environmental footprint while conserving natural resources.
She assured the public that Kenya Power would foster economic sustainability, drive good governance and build a sustainable future for the next generation.
