The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an advisory for heavy rainfall over parts of Central Kenya, Nairobi, the Central Rift Valley, and the Southeastern lowlands from Thursday, 14th November to Friday, 15th November.
In the advisory, the department listed Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Isiolo, Nakuru, Kericho, Bomet, and Narok, parts of Kajiado, Nairobi, Machakos, Kitui, and Makueni as areas of concern.
Southeastern lowlands and central Nairobi are expected to experience heavy rainfall exceeding 20mm in 24 hours, intensifying to 30mm+ on Friday, and potential flash floods in low-lying areas.
The rains however are projected to reduce in intensity from 16th November over most parts of the country. Meanwhile, Residents in all the mentioned areas are therefore advised to avoid walking or driving through moving water and stay clear of open fields.
They should also seek shelter indoors away from trees and windows during thunderstorms and those in landslide-prone areas on slopes of Aberdare Ranges, Mt. Kenya, and hilly areas should remain vigilant.
The department is also advising residents to be on the lookout for potential flash floods.
People living downstream rivers and along seasonal rivers should be careful since water may appear suddenly even though it may not be raining within the area.
