The National Hygiene Programme (NHP), dubbed Kazi Mtaani, aimed at creating jobs for the youth and cushioning them from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic has gathered pace in Mombasa.
The environmental campaign has given facelift to the informal settlements in the coastal city which previously overflowed with filth.
Kazi Mtaani which was initiated by the national government has benefitted informal settlements of Kaa Chonjo, Ziwa la Ng’ombe, Bangladesh and Old Town in Mombasa County.
About 7,500 youth from those areas were enlisted to carry out activities such as street cleaning, fumigation and disinfection, garbage collection, bush clearing and de-silting of choked gutters and unblocking of sewages among others.
The programme besides providing employment to the youth has also promoted health standards and protocols to limit the risk of the infection of the deadly covid-19 in slum areas.
