Kapenguria FC wins a Sh200,000 prestigious football tournament trophy  

The final leg and grand finale of the West Pokot County Women Representative Rael Aleutum Kasiwai football tournament concluded with an exhilarating match at the Chepareria Primary School playground in Pokot South Constituency, where the Kapenguria Football Club emerged victorious.

The impressive win by Kapenguria FC underscored their dominance and set a notable benchmark for all future tournaments in West Pokot County after beating Kiwawa FC two goals to nil.

The tournament, known as the “Mama County Football Program,” kicked off in late November and spanned several weeks, culminating in the final match held at the end of December.

Teams from various regions participated, showcasing their skills and competitive spirit as they progressed through several levels of competition, beginning at the ward level and advancing to the constituency finals.

In the event the spectators cheered passionately for their teams, the energy and enthusiasm in the air highlighted the event’s significance in fostering unity and encouraging young people to pursue sports.

The event showcased teams from four different constituencies including, Sigor, Kapenguria, Pokot, and Kacheliba.

The four teams that participated in the finals received a share of the prize money, with the leading team taking home Sh200,000, followed by Sh150,000, Sh100,000, and Sh75,000 respectively. Each team also received a trophy to help promote and develop grassroots football.

Speaking during the grand final tournament of the football match at Chepareria Primary School playground in Pokot South Constituency, Kasiwai expressed her gratitude for the participant’s involvement in the football tournament, highlighting the significance of sports activities for engaging youth.

She emphasized that the football tournament not only provided a constructive outlet for the young people of West Pokot County during the festive season but also served as an alternative to idleness that could otherwise lead to issues such as drug abuse.

Kasiwai actively encouraged youth to participate in sports as a viable livelihood option that can generate income for them.

She used the opportunity to also encourage community members to register for the Social Health Assurance medical scheme SHA, stressing its value as an essential healthcare coverage provided by the government.

Samuel Lomunokol, who recently took on the role of Chairman of Sport Kenya, praised the event for its community-building effect and the optimistic spirit it fostered as the new year approached.

He highlighted the health benefits of engaging in sports, asserting that active individuals tend to enjoy better sleep, reduced stress, and potentially longer lives.

He encouraged young people to harness their talents in sports, noting that professional athletes can achieve significant financial success.

Member of Parliament Peter Lochakapong applauded the football players, pointing out that their previous victories in the trials demonstrated their skill and determination.

He commended the event’s organization and urged fellow MPs to consider innovative ways to nurture local talent.

In a show of gratitude, he recognized the local community’s support as vital to the players’ success.

Former Governor John Lonyangapuo also thanked Aleutum for creating opportunities for young people through sports.

He mentioned that transparency regarding prize amounts might have encouraged even greater competition among participants.

Lonyangapuo reflected on his governor electoral loss and conveyed his aspirations for a political comeback in 2027 to continue his vision for the county.
