Kanja sworn in as Deputy Inspector General of Police

The newly appointed Deputy Inspector General of Police – Kenya Police Service, Mr. Douglas Kanja was today sworn in by Chief Justice Martha Koome at the Supreme Court building in Nairobi.

CJ Koome congratulated Mr Kanja on his appointment stressing that the meritocratic process of his appointment and his wide experience as a professional police officer makes him well qualified for the task ahead.

Koome also exuded confidence in Kanja’s ability to perform his duties in accordance with the law and fairness given that the Kenyan Constitution venerates the cardinal value and principle of justice.

“One of the mandates of the Kenya Police Service is to ensure the safety and security of the Kenyan people and their properties. The Police Service is expected to discharge this mandate within the confines of the constitutionally envisaged democratic policing whilst remaining accountable to the Kenyan people,” she maintained.

Koome urged the DIG to create closer working relations and trust between the police and the public saying policing becomes effective when people cooperate with police in the fight against crime and maintenance of social order.

“The oath which you have taken today should guide you in your day-to-day work. According to the oath, you must never depart from the law,” stressed Koome, adding that the oath equally requires the DIG to serve this country to the best of his abilities and bearing in mind the enormous responsibility placed upon him.
