A Member of Homa Bay County Assembly escaped death narrowly after he was attacked and seriously injured by a group of gangsters in Kibiri of Rachuonyo North Sub County Thursday evening.
Peter Asoyo Oriema, MCA for Kaksingri West Ward in Suba South Constituency was attacked by thugs while tracing his stolen motorbike which was stolen in February this year.
The MCA was hacked with an axe on his shoulder and head thus inflicting deep cuts on his body.
He was rushed to Kandiege health dispensary before being transferred to Aga khan Hospital in Kisumu where he is still recuperating.
It’s reported that the MCA who was in the company of East Kamagak counterpart Joshua Okumu Nyabola were heading to Homa Bay town from Kendu Bay where they had gone to attend a meeting of the MCAs of the county assembly.
According to one of his aides Danish Yambo, they were attacked at around 6pm when they were following a motorbike which was stolen in Homa Bay Town.
Yambo added that when they saw the motorbike on the road they tried to signal the rider who had carried a female passenger to stop but instead he diverted the route prompting them to follow him and in the process the rider abandoned the motorbike and disappeared into the
thicket with the key.
At the same time Yambo stated that they rushed together with Nyabola to take the motorbike while Asoyo was still inside the vehicle but before taking the motorbike, a group of six people emerged from Kadel trading centre with three motorbikes armed with crude weapons after they were signaled by the rider who had abandoned the bike on the roadside and started assaulting them.
During the fracas, one of the suspects removed an axe and hacked Oriema on the shoulder and head where he sustained deep cuts while Nyabola ran for his safety and hid inside one of the homes in the region.
Confirming the incident to KNA, Rachuonyo North Sub County police commander Sarah Chumo said they are following crucial leads which will enable them to nab the culprits.
Chumo assured the residents that they would make sure the suspects are brought to book, adding that the other MCA for East Kamagak escaped unhurt while the aide for the other MCA was roughed up during the incident.
She appealed to members of the public with any relevant information regarding where the thugs are hiding to confide it to security agencies.
