Kakamega County Government will set aside funds to support education and training of street children in various skills.
This follows willingness from the street children who asked for support to go back to school with others asking for training and being equipped to start income-generating activities.
County Secretary Lawrence Omuhaka said there is a need for a structured way of dealing with street children where the county and national government can address their concerns.
“We need to engage them; we should take them to technical institutions where they can learn skills that will make them survive in society. I know most of them are very brilliant,” he pointed out.
He said the street children are very vulnerable, calling for other stakeholders to join hands with the county and national government for their reintegration into society.
Omuhaka was speaking during the launch of Western Region Street Children Support Initiative at Approved School Grounds Kakamega on Monday, themed ‘Give a hand, change a life.’
In the initiative, various non-governmental organizations from Kakamega together with police officers have joined hands to support street children by taking them back to school and to technical training institutions and nurturing their talents.
The county police commander Lucy Kananu called on the stakeholders to continue supporting the street children to safeguard their future and that of their generation.
“Let us think about their future and the future of their children, because if they stay in the streets they are going to make generations,” he noted.
