The County Government of Kakamega is set to commence the construction of a 14 floor county headquarters at a cost of Sh 500 Million on a 3 acres’ piece of land.
The County Pension Fund (CPF) will finance the construction of the building with the county government required to service the amount in five years’ time.
The building which will be completed in six months’ time will accommodate all the county offices.
The Current county headquarters located at the Kakamega CBD has a few office spaces forcing other departments to rent in private properties.
The County Government has been using Sh 68 Million to pay rent for county departments that operate from private buildings.
Speaking during a public participation at Kakamega Social Hall, most residents supported the move by the county government to construct a one stop headquarters to accommodate all offices.
They urged the constructor to include a ramp and a lift for the offices to be disability friendly.
Violet Naliaka from Mahiakalo ward, who is also the Coordinator of Groots Kenya Kakamega urged the contractor to source labor from residents of kakamega during the construction works.
Peter Wasilwa, a member of CPF, assured the county and residents that they will comply with the laws of land while promising to source for labor from the locals.
“In fact we guarantee a minimum of 40% of the entire project budget to remain in Kakamega using matrices that can actually be tracked and reported,” he noted.
He noted that CPF will engage contractors to ensure quality of the construction works is attained. The technical team will also be part of the construction.
The County government has also offered 20 Engineers to supervise the project.
