Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa has pledged to elevate Kakamega municipality to city status by 2032 to mark a significant milestone in the development of the Western region.
He said the groundwork for achieving the vision has been laid and the focus shifted to the ambitious goal of elevating the Municipality to a city.
This comes after the governor recently awarded municipal charters to Butere, Matunda, and Malava towns to strategically position themselves for significant growth.
He added that the conferment of a municipal charter to the towns is a milestone for socio-economic growth and development.
Matunda, which is the fourth town to be conferred a charter in the region after Kakamega, Butere, and Malava, is the second-highest source of revenue generator after Kakamega municipality.
The governor also appointed Titus Mumia, Musafiri Kulova, and Joseph Lutilo as new acting managers for Butere, Malava, and Matunda Municipalities, respectively.
He said the elevation of the city would be a major financial breakthrough in the area and create more opportunities for the residents.
The residents have welcomed the move of the plan and are looking forward to the best opportunities and development.
He said once the region gains city status, it will position itself as a catalyst for economic growth that will greatly benefit its residents as it will become the sixth city after Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Eldoret.
The Governor was speaking after the conferment of a Charter to Matunda town as the fourth Municipality in the region.
