Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) from various parts of the country joined their Kakamega counterparts in solidarity to protest the murder of Kisa East MCA Stephen Maloba
The Slain MCA was allegedly stabbed during a confrontation at a meeting in Khiswero constituency.
The MCAs held demonstrations on Tuesday marching from the Kakamega County Assembly precincts to the regional police police headquarters and the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions calling for investigations and arrest of the killer.
They also asked the government to enhance their security as they engage with residents in their wards.
Speaker of the County Assembly James Namatsi said the MCA was brutally killed due to what he describes as political differences and misunderstanding.
He said if he had security details, then he would have been whisked away from the fracas and confrontation during the meeting.
Mr Namatsi asked the government to improve security details for the MCAs just like Members of Parliament and Senators among other leaders in the country.
The speaker noted that the terms for MCAs were well defined during the start of devolution but it has not been effected since.
“This has exposed our Members of County Assembly to risks of attacks and they now fear for their lives,” he noted.
The Speaker led the protesting MCAs to petition the Police to expedite investigations and arrest the culprit.
The Secretary General of County Assemblies Forum Chege Mwaura said all MCAs in the country are concerned with the murder of the Kakamega MCA.
He said it was shocking that even after being killed in broad daylight police officers have not yet made any arrests.
The MCAs also asked youths to desist from temptations of being used to commit such crimes.
They urged them to be patient and exercise their democratic rights through the ballot if at all they do not like a certain leader.
Western Regional Police Commander Kiprono Langat assured the residents of Kisa East and Members of County Assembly that investigations are ongoing.
He said a team of police officers have been sent to conduct investigations asking residents to volunteer any information that may lead to arrest of the murderers.
He urged leaders to be calm to ease the tension that is high in the Ward following last week’s murder.
