Kakamega County government has begun rehabilitating and upgrading sports grounds across county.
Chief Officer (CO) for Public Works Eng. Patrick Likavo says they have handed over three sports grounds in Shinyalu and Mumias East Sub-Counties to contractors for commencement of the works.
Eng. Likavo said a technical team has been constituted to work closely with the contractors to ensure the work is done to the required standards and completed within the set timelines.
“The rehabilitation of the sporting facilities aims at nurturing and developing talents among the residents,” he stated.
He directed Sub-County administrators to constitute Project Management Committees to oversee the implementation of the projects.
The County Director of Sports (CDS) James Muchiri said they intend to upgrade all the play grounds in the county.
Muchiri said phase one will see five grounds done including Solyo and Mukumu Girls High School grounds in Shinyalu Sub-County, Bumwende in Mumias East, Matete in Lugari and Emanani in Matungu.
Bukhungu Stadium Manager Edward Odera, who is also in charge of the programme, said once upgraded the facilities would benefit learning institutions as well as neighbouring communities.
Odera said the works are supposed to be completed in six months and will involve landscaping and levelling, erection of pavilion stands, goal posts, track beacons and marking of the fields.
