Kakamega County has issued bursaries amounting to Sh240 million to cater for the tuition of students from vulnerable backgrounds.
Governor Fernandes Barasa said the bursary scheme will cater for all needy students in the 60 wards across the county.
Barasa pointed out that the County Government is focused on improving infrastructure in ECDE centres and county polytechnics in the area.
“Education is the key to empowering young people. The handing over of bursaries comes to a halt after a successful conclusion at Butere Sub County Headquarters,” Governor Barasa said.
This was the final phase of the 2023/2024 fiscal year that saw the Khwisero sub-county receiving Sh16 million as bursaries.
The four wards of Kisa North, Kisa Central, Kisa West, and Kisa East will each receive Sh4 million, which will benefit 4,225 students.
The governor reiterated that the programme seeks to invest in future human capital in Kakamega County through the sponsorship of quality training, skills, and knowledge for empowerment opportunities.
About 5,904 students in Matungu Sub County also benefitted from the scheme across all five wards of Kholera, Koyonzo, Mayoni, Khalaba, and Namamali.
The governor noted that the needy learners will have access to quality education and will be supported to achieve their full potential.
Governor Barasa, who was accompanied by other government officials, was speaking in Butere Sub County while finalising the issuance of bursaries in the county.
