Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang says the Senate was ready to dispense with the motion on the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
He however urged members of the National Assembly to follow the right process in handling the exercise when the debate on the motion on the proposed impeachment of Mr Gachagua is taken before the upper House.
“We shall rise above partisan politics to do justice for the impeachment process.” Kajwang said.
He noted that Kenyans were given an opportunity to weigh in on the matter through public participation last Friday and Saturday.
Mr Kajwang assured Kenyans that the Senate will follow the law when the matter is taken before it.
He assured Kenyans that Senators will make the right decision on the impeachment of Mr Gachagua.
Mr Kajwang also proposed changes in law to make it easy for Kenyans to recall members of the National Assembly.
He said it is easy to impeach governors, president and deputy president but very difficult to recall Members of Parliament (MPs)
“I will be proposing some amendments to the law. It is very easy to impeach a President, Deputy President and Governor but is difficult to remove MPs from office,” the Senator said.
Speaking at Kanyadhiang location in Homa Bay county today, Mr Kajwang said only two thirds of senators are required to impeach the President and the Deputy President.
“All the governors who have been impeached were elected by thousands of voters but took only two thirds of senators to remove them from office,” he said.
Mr Kajwang noted that an MP can also be removed from office if he or she has been convicted for a criminal offence.
“We must go back to the Elections Act and align it to Article 99 of the constitution. Once an MPs is convicted of a criminal office, he or she should be removed from office,” he said.
Also present were Karachuonyo Member of Parliament (MP) Adipo Okuome, Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron and his Ndhiwa counterpart Martin Owino.
Mr Owino and Mr. Oron both said they are ready to take part in the impeachment motion of the deputy president.
Oron claimed that there was turbulence in Kenya Kwanza and they want to help them put their house in order.
