Kajiado residents protest arrest of MCA over incitement claims

Transport along the busy Kajiado- Namanga highway was disrupted for hours Thursday at Il Bissil town after angry residents barricaded the highway to protest the arrest of a former Member of County Assembly (MCA).
Former Matapato North MCA Lesalaon ole Seki was arrested Thursday morning on claims of inciting the public to kill wild animals in the area.
Kajiado KWS County Warden Muteru Njauuini confirmed that the former MCA was arrested on incitement allegations after he appeared on a television news clip calling on residents to kill any wild animals that invade their homes and farms.
Seki’s arrest sparked off violence in Bissil town as residents blocked the main highway with burning tyres as they demand his “unconditional” release.
Motorists plying the road were kept waiting for close to three hours as police officers attempted to put off fires lit on the main road.
At some point, police officers were forced to lob tear gas on the irate residents, who had taken over the road as they demanded the release of their leader.
Kajiado Central Police Commander Daudi Lornyokwe warned residents against holding unlawful demonstrations and blocking the highway and called for dialogue in resolving any stand-offs.
Elsewhere in Kajiado town, a former employee at the Kajiado referral hospital was on Thursday killed by a speeding car along the Namanga road as she attempted to cross.
The 57-year-old woman is suspected to have committed suicide over unspecified reasons
According to eye-witnesses, the woman had been seen earlier walking along the road talking to herself and when she saw an on-coming vehicle, she ran towards it fast.
The driver of the vehicle Dennis Owino said he tried to hit the brakes but it was too late as the woman got hit and fell into a ditch.
Her body was being taken to the Kajiado County Referral Hospital with the police launching investigations into the incident.
