Junior Secondary School (JSS) interns in Kakamega County have vowed not to go to class unless they are confirmed on Permanent and Pensionable (PnP) employment terms.
The interns have also demanded compensation for the one year, claiming the Government has been under paying them.
The tutors said they now have low morale which may affect their content delivery, leading to poor performance of their students.
They were speaking after holding a peaceful demonstration across Kakamega town and sought an audience with the Teachers Service Commission director to address their grievances.
Speaking to the Media, one of their representatives Francis Odero said most of them are going through tough moments yet they have the necessary qualification, skills and certification to be confirmed as full time teachers.
“We are going through tough moments and we are demanding that the government to confirm us with immediate effect and the confirmation should not go beyond the 1st of July this year,” he said.
Odero also questioned why some Members of Parliament have been issuing TSC letters to teachers in public, a role he says is supposed to be undertaken by the Commission.
Silas Owiti, a longtime serving teacher who accompanied them said the Interns are competent and able to teach, asking the government to confirm them.
He said as teachers they will maintain professionalism asking the government to also respect their obligations, duties and willingness.
