The West Pokot County Government, in partnership with the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative organization (DNDI), has established a specialized hospital ward in Pokot Central subcounty for treatment of persons infected with Kala-azar disease.
The move marks a significant milestone in the county’s endeavor to combat neglected diseases like Kala-azar, which have significantly impacted the Pokot communities, particularly in North and Central Pokot.
Speaking during the launch of the of Kala-azar ward in Sigor area in Pokot central sub county, the Director General of DNDI, Prof Samuel Kariuki, highlighted the collaboration with the county government in providing treatment to patients suffering from neglected diseases, especially in some parts of West Pokot County.
Kariuki emphasized the importance of bringing medical services closer to the people, with many individuals experiencing hardships hence serving them near their locality brings them joy.
He noted that the entire project of the hospital ward cost Sh20 million, with the primary objective of assisting all patients affected by Kala-azar disease in the areas.
Prof Kariuki mentioned the installation of solar power to illuminate the wards with an eye on reducing electricity expenses for the hospital.
Additionally, he outlined the organization’s plans to establish treatment centers to ensure that every citizen receives appropriate medical services in their areas.
He stressed the desire to alleviate the burden that compels patients to undertake long journeys from the area in search of medical services.
Prof. Kariuki expressed his gratitude to the West Pokot county government for their collaboration in ensuring the successful completion of the hospital ward project.
West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin praised the organization for their dedication to addressing the challenges posed by neglected diseases in the county.
He also announced the launch of a new large ward aimed at providing assistance to long-suffering patients from Kala –azar disease affecting mothers and elderly individuals.
Governor Kachapin expressed confidence that, in line with the objective outlined in the declaration, the neglected diseases ought to be eradicated by the year 2030.
He assured residents that plans are underway to elevate Sigor hospital to a Level 4 facility, thereby extending vital healthcare services to the local community.
Member of County Assembly (MCA) Lomut ward Jacob Toung’ole urged residents to take advantage of the opportunity to seek treatment for neglected disease from the health facilities set aside for the treatment of the disease.
