Isiolo farmers get Sh13 million farm Inputs

Farmers in Isiolo County have benefited from a donation of agricultural equipment from the World Food Programme (WFP) worth Sh13 million.
They received equipment comprising agro-shade-nets, plastic water tanks, water pumps, pangas, jembes, sickles, wheelbarrows, spades, watering cans and 380 bags of sweet potato vines in a bid to improve food security in the County.
The sweet potato vines will be distributed to the farmers for planting during this rainy season.
Bee keepers will also benefit from free beehives, catcher boxes and bee harvesting kits which include bee-suits, hive tools, smokers and gloves.
The County Agricultural Engineering department also received station survey equipment, dumpy levels and measuring tapes that will support survey work to plan and rehabilitate degraded rangelands as well as three motor bikes for use by extension service providers.
Isiolo governor Dr. Mohamed Kuti who received the donation said that the equipment will enhance food production hence reducing the high level of relief-food dependency among county residents that has been the norm for years.
He observed that the County has adequate arable land that can produce plenty of food, but was underutilized due to the pastoralist way of life that has been adopted by most people within the County.
The support to farmers follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the County Government of Isiolo and the World Food Programme (WFP) in July 2019 where the two partners will implement various activities in the area.
