The government is working on creating policies that encourage research and innovation in the country through partnerships with SMEs, academia, and the private Sector.
Industrialization PS Dr. Juma Mukhwana has said the policies will improve the absorption of new technologies by SMEs and commercialization of innovative technologies in the industry.
Speaking during Mount Kenya University 24th graduation ceremony in Thika Friday, Dr. Mukhwana said universities have helped in the development of several innovations that have been internationally acknowledged and awarded and that have been instrumental in supporting the establishment of small-scale industrial start-ups.
“Universities are instrumental in the growth of the SME sector through their innovations. We are working on policies to have the innovations commercialized and absorbed by SMEs,” he said.
The PS underscored the role small-scale industries have made in generating employment, driving innovation, value addition and employment creation.
“Industrial economic development contributes to the employment of 14.1 million Kenyans, which translates into at least 93% of our national workforce. It also contributes 24% to the GDP and therefore the government is keen to grow the sector through innovations and technology,” Dr. Mukhwana said.
He called for partnerships in research, technology transfer, mentorship programs, and internships so as to empower small-scale industries with the latest technological advancements and market insights, thus enhancing their productivity and competitiveness.
MKU Vice Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi said the institution is working to align its curricula with the emerging trends and address market demands through the introduction of Masters in Pharmacy in Cosmetic Technology, Pharmacy in Industrial Pharmacy, and Science in Industrial Pharmacognosy and Traditional Medicine.
The VC added that the institution is working on upgrading its e-content modules into SCORM files with digital content, which is self-paced with voiceover, so as to establish suitability and relevance and to make their programmes cost-effective in the era of technology integration.
“The University has continued to upgrade the E-learning platforms and the student management information systems to support real-time Integration with Microsoft Teams to enhance blended learning. This improves students, teachers’ experience on the digital platforms, content delivery and quality of teaching,” he said.
Prof. Jaganyi said postgraduate training is also being strengthened by enhancing the postgraduate Center in Nairobi Campus to support postgraduate students.
The chairman of the university council, Dr. Vincent Gaitho, said the university has embraced the internationalization of Higher Education and attracted both local and international students to pursue internationally accredited programmes.
“Our digital footprint is growing globally, with students enrolling from more than 40 nationalities,” he said.
During the ceremony, some 5,763 graduands were conferred with Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates.
