The government has disbursed text books worth more than Sh60 million towards implementation of the new curriculum.
Speaking in Murang’a Thursday when he led a delegation from Zambia to benchmark on Kenyan education system, Director of project coordination and delivery in the ministry of education Mr. Elijah Mungai said the government is committed to ensuring that learners have enough reading materials on competency based curriculum (CBC).
“We are striving to achieve one to one book ratio in every school to ensure every child has maximum interaction with books among other reading materials in effort to attain quality education,” he noted.
Mungai underscored the importance of pre-service training of teachers on new curriculum saying the move will ensure there would be no disruption in rolling out the CBC.
“Pre-service training will be of big importance in ensuring effective implementation of the new curriculum as it will deepen skills and preparation of teachers before they join the service,” added the Director.
He noted that currently teachers for Pre-Primary1, Pre-Primary 2, and grade 1 to grade 3 have been trained on the new curriculum, which is already in the course of implementation, while admitting that they still have enormous work in training teachers on the CBC.
Mungai lauded the Zambian delegation led by their education permanent secretary Dr. Felix Phiri for visiting the country, adding that the Zambian government has fully implemented CBC, thus Kenyans will learn advantages and disadvantages of the curriculum.
He added that the ministry will also embed new technology and life skills in the new curriculum so as to make school leavers comfortably fit in the society.
On his part, Dr. Phiri said their visit is purportedly to benchmark on policies geared towards improving quality of their education.
The Zambian Permanent secretary lauded Kenyan education system particularly embracing of digital learning in schools and effective distribution of books to public schools.
“For the days we have been in Kenya, we have learned a lot and we are going to exchange ideas with Kenyan education officials on how to go by achieving quality education in both countries,” added Phiri.
The delegation of 14 officers from Zambia visited three schools in Murang’a County including Technology Primary School, Gaturi Girls High School and Kigumo Bendera Boys School.
