The government through the Ministry of Devolution has donated 500 bags of rice and 860bags of beans that will benefit some 1720 drought stricken families in ijara sub County.
Ijara Deputy County commissioner Mr Willy chemboi told a press briefing that the first consignment of relief supplies was distributed to the neediest in Masalani estates saying each household will get 20kilograms of both rice and beans.
Mr cheboi said the government had established 86 relief distribution centres in Ijara sub county adding that no household will be left out as more consignment from the government was expected.
The DCC said drought has reached alert position adding that the rains expected in late March will improve the situation.
He said the herders have been walking for almost 40 kilometers from Falama, Gababa, Trugata, Abalatirow, Abdigure and Warsama to fetch water in Tana River and urged farmers to avoid cultivating their crops along the water corridors to avert conflict with the herders.
Mr Cheboi asked the farmers and livestock herders to be friendly and assist each other during this drought season.
