IEBC extends deadline for submission of nominated persons

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), has extended the deadline for the submission of lists for nominated person by political parties to the Commission from today 10th to 12th May, 2022 at 5.00 pm.

IEBC Chairman, Wafula Chebukati, said the Commission had given the political parties who had submitted lists that were not compliant with the two thirds gender rule up to Monday 9th May, 2022, however, some parties were unable to resubmit their lists due to time constraints.

“Political Parties are advised that there shall be no further extension beyond the said date,” stated Chebukati.

In a press statement sent to newsrooms, the Chairman said the Commission had noted that a cross section of political parties that submitted lists of nominated persons on 5th May, 2022 were not compliant with the two thirds gender rule, prompting IEBC to accord them an opportunity to revise their lists for submission on 9th May.

“The Commission extends the deadline for political parties to submit their lists of nominated persons to May 12, 2022, at 5 pm,” Chebukati said.

The Court Order issued in Constitutional Petition No.19 of 2017 in Katiba Institute Vs Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, requires that political parties nominating candidates for elective positions adhere to the two thirds gender principle.

“Registered political parties in the country have until Thursday, May 12, 2022, to ensure that they comply with the two-third gender rule, failing to comply may risk being blocked from taking part in the August 9 General Elections,” Chebukati warned.
