National Super Alliance leader Raila Odinga’s wife, Mrs Idah Odinga has expressed concern over the increasing rate of teenage pregnancies in Siaya County.
She said it was quite unfortunate that over 12,900 teenage girls conceived in Siaya County in 2018 alone and warned that the community and especially those along the beaches ought to change their behaviour to end the vice.
She warned that as leaders, they will not sit back and watch young school age girls stray into unnecessary relationships that eventually end up ruining their future.
She made the remarks during a behavior change campaign, Sunday which was organized by African Youth and Adolescent Associates (AYADA) at Wich-lum beach in Bondo constituency. She tasked the youths with the responsibility of taking care of their sisters.
The former Prime Minister’s wife took the opportunity to also caution the youths against engaging in drug and substance abuse, noting that over indulgence in alcohol was ruining lives of many youths in the County.
The rate of teenage pregnancies currently stands at 40 percent in Siaya County and according to the County’s Executive Committee member for Health, Mrs. Dorothy Owino, a taskforce has already been established under the leadership of the county commissioner to find a lasting solution into the matter.
The occasion was organised, courtesy of the Director of AYADA,Ms. Catherine Abong’o through the assistance of Kisumu Businessman, Aggrey Owino.
It was also attended by Siaya Governor’s wife, Rosella Rasanga and a number of MCAs among other guests.
