A nine-year-old boy has died after he was mauled by a heyena in suguta Marmar area, while herding goats in Samburu west sub county.
Confirming the incident, Samburu Central Deputy Police Commander Abdikadir Malicha said the boy succumbed to deep bite injuries, while undergoing treatment at Samburu county referral hospital on Sunday afternoon.
He said that the deceased was in the company of his young sister who was also bitten by the wild animal on both legs and hands as she tried to rescue her brother.
The girl who is a standard two pupil is admitted at Samburu county referral hospital but is in stable condition.
Malicha added that two other people who responded to save the children’s lives were also hurt by the animal.
He said police received the information and rushed to the scene where they rushed the victims to hospital.
“A total of four people were rushed to hospital with injuries, unfortunately the boy died while undergoing a treatment, the girl is admitted and two others were treated and discharged,” he said.
He said members of the public killed the animal.
Residents in some parts of Samburu central have been complaining of losing property and lives to wild animal especially hyenas, elephants and lion attacks.
The residents have now called upon the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) protect them from stray wild animals and also speed up compensation for the victims of wildlife attacks in the region.
