The national government has allocated shillings 10 million for the Presidential Bursary Scheme to orphans and vulnerable children in Homa-Bay County.
County Director of Children Services Peter Kutere said the funds will be distributed evenly in every Sub-County with each getting a total of Sh630, 000.
Speaking yesterday during a public baraza at Bunge la Wananchi grounds in Homa Bay Town, Kutere added that the funds will be channeled through committees established in every sub county to vet the beneficiaries.
The Director further said that the applicants must attach the death certificates of their parents to authenticate their orphaned status. He appealed to the locals to step up the fight against sexual offences targeting minors adding that the perpetrators were well known individuals within the society.
The County Police Commander Esther Seroney on her part decried rampant cases of early pregnancies and defilement in Homa-Bay County and urged the locals to work together to ensure security is strengthened in the county.
“Security begins with you and therefore there is need for everyone to play their part in the responsibility,” said Seroney.
Others who graced the meeting included the County Department of Criminal Investigations Officer Homa-Bay Daniel Wachira, County Commissioner Irungu Macharia and the Speaker of the Bunge La Wenye Nchi Walter Opiyo.
