A Form Four student at Hola Boys High School in Tana River County drowned last Wednesday while swimming in a water pan at Wata hamesa in Kone village of Mikinduni location in Tana River Sub County.
The body was recovered after rescue team led by the Kenya Red Cross Society personnel was called in to help retrieve the body after ill equipped villagers divers failed.
Villagers told KNA that students from the school had developed a habit of sneaking out of the institution to swim at the water pan that was filled by heavy rains experienced in the area over the last one month.
Speaking to the press at the scene, Chief Mikinduni location Mr. Bashiri Doyo confirmed the incident but urged the school’s administration and parents in the area to restrain their children from playing at the killer pan.
Mr. Doyo called on the Principal Mr. Stanley Motto to take disciplinary measures against the students who sneak from school in order to swim to avoid more deaths.
The chief said, the victim was seen by the villagers swimming in the water pan while accompanied by other three students who later reported the matter to the Principal.
The recovered body was buried yesterday evening at the home village of the student at Wachakone.
