The Government has set aside Sh1.2 billion for provision of relief food to Kenyans affected by famine in the country.
Government Spokesperson Col. (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna, said the targeted beneficiaries will receive physical food stuffs this November as the government makes arrangements to kick-start the cash transfer programme for the hungry next month.
Col. Oguna made the remarks as he flagged off relief food distribution in Halane, Bula Wagbari and Maalim Salat locations of Wajir East Sub-County, Wajir County.
The food rations were shared amongst 10 locations in Wajir East Sub-County with each of them receiving 50 and 17 bags of rice and beans respectively.
The Government Spokesperson reiterated that there are sufficient food reserves to see the drought-hit areas through the raging dry spell.
“The President assured that no Kenyan will die of hunger and indeed no Kenyan has died,” he said.
Director of Special Programmes, Mr Omar Haji, announced that the government will double food rations for Wajir County from the current 6,000 bags of rice and beans to 12, 000 bags.
“We will also include maize, cooking oil and food supplements,” Haji said.
He made the announcement following appeals from residents to the government to include maize in the relief food rations saying this would help feed dying livestock.
