Governor suspends development projects to address ravaging drought

Isiolo Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo has appealed to the development partners in the County to suspend all development activities and channel the funds to mitigate against drought.

Guyo said that his government has already suspended all development projects and channeled the funds to purchase food, drugs, water trucking and paying school fees for the needy cases.

The governor said that two Members of Parliament from Isiolo will help a number of residents to meet part of school fees through respective National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) for students schooling in the area while his government would take care of those studying outside the county.

Speaking to development partners in Isiolo town, Guyo said that the county government would provide food to schools and appealed to development actors to adjust their priorities to suit the County Steering Group planning.

He commended Senator Fatuma Dullo and Women Representative Mumina Bonaya for spearheading distribution of assorted relief food stuffs from friends and urged other elected and opinion leaders to emulate them.

Guyo said that residents of Modogashe town would soon get clean drinking water for humans and animals when drilling of a new borehole in the area was completed.

He said that the county government partnered with National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) to drill a borehole at Kone and pipe it for 25km to Modogashe.

On Education, the governor directed ward administrators to liaise with chiefs and their assistants to ensure there was 100 percent transition from Primary to Secondary education level.

Isiolo County Commissioner Mr. Geoffrey Omoding said that drought had affected over 70 percent of pastoralists and advised the Water and Grazing committees to properly regulate available water and pasture resources to avoid community conflicts.

Omoding appealed to the herders from the neighbouring Counties to stick to rules and regulations laid down by the local security and grazing committees. The administrator said that the National Police Reservists are directed to man water sources and also patrol the grazing areas to ensure there is adequate security.
