Governor Ottichilo cautions youth on misuse of technology

Vihiga Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo has called on the young people to be wary as they harness the developments in the world of technology.

Dr. Ottichilo stated that although the advancement in the technological field has innumerable advantages like enabling easy and quick communication and faster execution of tasks, its flipside is blood chilling.

He singled out the smartphone, which he said was being misused by young people who through internet, are exploring obscene sites, and in other instances creating clips or posting outrageous pictures and messages on different social media platforms.

He stated that whatever one consumes and posts on the internet depicts their character and that nowadays potential employers search the social media handles of the jobseekers to confirm who they truly are.

The Governor, who was speaking when he met a third cohort of the beneficiaries of the county scholarship programme who sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education in 2024, congratulated the group for posting good grades.

The cohort had 125 of beneficiaries comprising 78 boys and 47 girls out of whom 116 attained the university entry grad C+ while the remaining nine, 5 got c plain and 4 c minus.

David Obeya, who scored a straight A of 84 points at Murang’a high school, together with the other 16 who got A minus, were awarded the 2025 diary from the county government; which were inscribed with their names and the grades attained.

During the event, the governor also rewarded the Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) which excelled in last year’s national drama, music and film festival.

The VTCs received certificates and cash price. They included Gimamoi, which won a solo verse category and received Sh. 10,000; Keveye who won music and modern dance and received Sh. 10,000; Maseno did well in the narrative and received Sh. 20,000 while Mwambeba received Sh. 30,000, being the highest amount, for shining in several genres.

The institutions then issued the trophies they had won to the county government for safe keeping in the main repository.

The Governor pledged to increase funding towards the VTCs so that as many residents as possible have access to training in various trades and crafts for self-reliance in skill, paving the way for self-employment.
