Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro has geared up efforts to install internet in public places in Kilifi to promote digital transformation and help citizens tap into the digital economy.
On Tuesday evening, the County boss launched a public Wi-Fi at Mazingira Park in Kilifi town, a few weeks after installing similar internet in other public places including Charo wa Mae and Oloitiptip markets.
During the event, the Governor revealed that digital transformation is among his top five priorities where he targets providing connectivity to the citizens of Kilifi as a tool to spur talent, arts, innovation, and creativity.
He added that the free internet will promote investments that target mainly the digital space and ensure that Kilifi County remains economically competitive.
“It is with this understanding that I took this opportunity immediately and through my CEC Education and ICT, we have invested in a secure, fast, and reliable internet by providing free Wi-Fi zones in parts of Kilifi town and Malindi,” he said.
Mung’aro disclosed that the county will continue to invest heavily in ICT to ensure that the county leads in digital transformation.
He added that most of the government services are migrating to the digital space and providing free internet will help citizens access those services easily without having to visit offices.
“This venture we have embarked on will enhance the uptake of e-government services as well as promote the youth towards utilization of the internet platforms,” he said.
Mung’aro assured the public that more sites will come up in major towns such as Malindi, Mariakani, Mazeras, Mtwapa, and Watamu, targeting to reach more markets, technical centers, and social halls.
