Governor decries poor academic performance in Turkana.

Govenor Josphat Nanok has expressed concern over the poor results posted by the candidates who sat national examinations from Turkana.

Speaking in Lodwar yesterday the governor said it is time for the county leaders and residents to establish the cause of the poor results.

“Over the last two years we have been performing poorly as a county in national exams, we must now ask ourselves where the problems lies and come up with solutions, ” said Nanok.

He added, “we have failed our students and also wronged God by not doing enough to support our children to enable them perform better”

Towards this end the county will be holding a county forum that will seek to identify the cause of the declining performance and provide solutions to these problems.

Turkana County used to be among the top performers in the country in the 90s but the performance has continued to go down over time.

Among the issues that stakeholders will be seeking to address are the teacher to pupil ratio, discipline in schools,  construction of new high schools, low morale among teachers.

Issues like outdated cultural practices like early marriages could feature in the debate.

Schools like Lodwar high school which used to produce top performers in the country like the former speaker of the Senate Ekwe Ethuro, current speaker of county assembly Erustus Ekitela, Prof. Thomas Akuja and others, but has now been posting poor results over the recent past.
