Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has flagged off a consignment of essential drugs and medical supplies worth 50 million shillings for distribution to all Level 2 and 3 health facilities across the county.
Barasa said the exercise was part of the county government’s effort to strengthen healthcare service delivery and ensure accessibility of medicines at the grassroots.
Speaking during the event at the Malava sub-county headquarters today, he noted that the supplies will go a long way in addressing drug shortages and enhancing the capacity of health facilities to provide timely and quality care.
“The distribution of these drugs to 181 health facilities marks an important step in our journey towards an efficient and responsive healthcare system,” said the Governor.
“We are determined to ensure our people access essential medical services without unnecessary delays or financial burden.”
The governor warned health workers against diverting the drugs to private clinics, stressing that stern action would be taken against those found culpable.
“I want to be very clear that these drugs are meant for public health facilities and not private businesses. Any health worker caught selling them will be dismissed immediately,” he warned.
Governor Barasa said the public nature of the flag-off was meant to silence critics who have been peddling misinformation about drug shortages in public hospitals.
“We are doing this in broad daylight so that those claiming there are no drugs in our facilities can see the truth for themselves,” he added.
Governor Barasa was accompanied by Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), senior county health officials, and other stakeholders in the health sector.
The Governor restated his commitment to investing in preventive and curative healthcare to improve overall well-being among residents.
