The government plans to utilize a total of Ksh. 1,505,237, 630.17 for road projects estimated at 701.24 kms within Nairobi County for the Financial Year 2024/ 2025.
The works that will be undertaken by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) include performance based routine maintenance of 598.22 Kms at a cost of Sh. 851,261,842.47, routine maintenance of 75kms at 121, 837,240.24, Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) projects of 24.8 km at a cost of 334,000,000.00 and periodic maintenance of 3.22 Kms at a cost of Sh. 198,138,547.67 respectively.
An Assistant Director at KURA, Eng. Edwin Lekariap, said the Authority is currently working on 27 on-going road projects for financial year 2023/2024 in various parts of the city totaling 745.52 kms at a cost of sh. 1,648,618,053.
“We have completed periodic maintenance roads totaling 24.75 kms at a cost of sh 314,813,305.58 for the FY 2022/2023 road projects. We are also going on with corridor clearance for the same financial year,” he added.
The Engineer said the corridor clearance project is expected to end in July 17th this year.
Eng. Lekariap was briefing the National Government Development Regional /County Implementation Coordination and Management Committee (NGD-RICMC/CICMC) meeting chaired by the Nairobi County Commissioner David Wanyonyi, held at the Regional Commissioner’s Boardroom at Nyayo House Building.
The constructions work for the on-going roads for FY 2023/ 2024 roads are the Eastern Bypass, Utawala road, Airport North road, Rabai Road, Mumias South road, Juja road, 1st Avenue Eastleigh road, Muratina road, Mathare North road, Ngara road, Outering road, Lunga Lunga road, Nairobi ICD Southern Bypass Industrial Area, Garden Estate road, Loresho Ridge road, James Gichuru road, Karen road, Hospital road, Argwings Kodhek road and Gitanga road Westlands among others.
KURA cited encroachment especially by Kiosks and informal traders on the roads as some of the challenges it is encountering in maintaining roads within the city.
County Commissioner Wanyonyi assured that the National government in collaboration with other agencies will ensure that people do not encroach along road reserves
