The government plans to employ 3,000 trainers this year to meet the high demand for tutors in Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institutions across the country.
The institutions are currently facing acute shortage of trainers following the government introduction of capitation and Higher Education Loans (HELB) for students at the institutions.
Vocational and Technical Training PS Dr. Kevit Desai said 2,000 trainers have already been employed, while 1,000 more will be hired before January this year and a further 4,000 in the next financial year.
Dr. Desai said the government is committed in supporting the institutions to full capacity as they hold the key in delivering on the Big Four agenda.
Speaking during the Konoin Technical Training Institute (KOTTI) graduation ceremony in Bomet Friday, the PS urged the graduands to utilize the skills and knowledge gained from the institution in serving their county, adding that technical education remains key to the attainment of the government development blue print, Vision 2030.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment not only in setting up the institutions, but also ensuring they are adequately equipped to offer quality education and capacities for development.
“In view of the fact the backbone of our social and economic prosperity in both counties and country is dependent on the success of TVETs in transition to employment, equipment has to be provided and trainings have to be provided. These are community colleges, they are there to transit the community to development. We are in partnership with county integrated development plans (CIDP) to fully realize those outcomes and to promote employment pathways for young people,” said Dr. Desai.
He appealed to county government’s leadership to promote awareness of TVET institutions as centers of hope for their communities.
“We seek your leadership to go to the remote parts of this country, villages and give hope to families that indeed this is not a place for failures. TVET institutions are the place for development so we need that enrollment and we need your leadership in ensuring that we not only bring the networks, links to these institutions like farmers, as well families and also other stakeholders so that we can create capacities for development,” he said.
During the event 24 graduands from 12 TVETs across the country notably Konoin TTI, Lari TVC, Riamo TTI, Murang’a TTI, Kapel TTI, Kiptaragon TTI, Michuki TTI, Wajir TVC, Dr. D.W. Murende TVC, Ngong TVC, North Horr TTI, Emsos TTI and Webuye West TVC were conferred with certificates after completing a five months training course in agricultural value addition.
The institution Principal Haron Onguso Maosa commended the community for supporting the facility, while appreciating the government for choosing the two and a half old institution to host the National Agricultural Value Addition Training.
