The government is set to issue close to 40, 000 title deeds in Laikipia County, Lands Cabinet Secretary Farida Karoney Tuesday said.
Speaking in Nanyuki after touring the local lands registry, Karoney said the move was in line with President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive that the ministry fast-tracks titling of land in the country.
“Laikipia is among 12 counties that we are piloting in issuance of titles to as many land owners as possible,” She said.
The CS observed that Laikipia was home to many land buying companies and therefore issuance of title deeds needed to be streamlined and fast tracked to ensure owners got the vital documents.
Karoney further said that her ministry was working closely with counties in urban centre planning.
“We want to see land set aside for farming and also for urban growth and development so that we have controlled expansion of urban centres,” Karoney said.
She added that her ministry had streamlined operations that had seen fraudulent transactions brought down.
Laikipia Deputy Governor John Mwaniki said that his government was in close collaboration with the Lands Ministry in repossessing all grabbed public land.
“Land grabbing is rampant here in Laikipia especially in our urban centres and that’s why we are working with the ministry to have all the public utility plots reverted to the rightful owners since most of them belong to government,” Mwaniki said.
The CS was expected to start giving out the title deeds Wednesday at Likii and Majengo areas of Nanyuki town.
