Government to decentralize issuance of passports at Huduma Centers

The government is considering decentralising the issuance of passports at Huduma Centres to facilitate a wider reach of Kenyans in need of the document.

Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku said should the proposal be given a nod, immigration officers will be deployed at some Huduma Centres to offer the crucial service.

This comes at a time when Kenyans continue to complain of delays and frustrations when accessing the document at the few immigration offices across the country.

CS Ruku said the demand for the document has skyrocketed over the years due to the many Kenyans who continue to seek jobs abroad and thus the need to streamline the issuance process.

“Immigration is one of the services that most Kenyans ask for at Huduma centres. We shall see how we can synchronize this to ensure passport registration can also be processed from Huduma centres,” said Ruku.

He was speaking today after an impromptu tour of Kiambu Huduma Centre in Thika town to assess service delivery.

The CS at the same time undertook to fast-track the processing of Certificates of Good Conduct following delay concerns which he said have cost several youths opportunities.

He said his office would collaborate with the relevant agencies to hasten the issuance of the crucial document.

On adherence to the code of conduct for public servants, the CS warned inefficient and lazy civil servants that they will be dealt with according to the law.

He assured that his ministry would work closely with all government departments to implement practical, timely, and citizen-centered reforms aimed at enhancing service delivery.
