Gucha South Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner Endonga Nanok has assured Nyamarambe fish farmers that the government will arrest people who steal fish from their ponds.
Addressing fish keepers during the Annual Aquaculture Day in Nyamarambe, Gucha South Sub-County, Mr Nanok urged them to report suspects to security agents for them to be arrested and prosecuted.
“Make sure that you always consult experts from fisheries department to enhance your production,” he added.
The County Executive Member for Agriculture, Osman Onsarigo revealed that plans were afoot to effect strategies that will tackle birds’ fish predating menace in the region.
Onsarigo advised youth and women to venture into fish farming as it is poised to become a lucrative business in coming years.
He encouraged them to form groups to enable them access funds for startup capital for fish farming. “Several farmers have already welcomed the idea of fish farming with more than 1500 new farmers targeted in the Aquaculture Business Development Program,” Onsarigo remarked.
Some 15 counties have received funding to the tune of Sh14.5 billion from The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to implement the program.
